Shangilia Skatepark (Nairob, Kenya)
Shangilia Skatepark was designed and built in 2013 by the skate community and Skateaid, a German NGO. Daniel Gluche, one of our consultants, was the main driver behind the project and you'll still find him regularly skating at the park. The park is located at the Tumshanglieni Children's Home in Loresho, a suburb of Nairobi.
In 2023, the park, now 10 years old and badly in need of maintenance, was to be resurfaced with contributions from Carrefour Kenya. We were able to use this opportunity to redesign and renovate the park to improve the flow, make it more beginner-friendly, add new features for intermediate skaters and improve the general infrastructure. This process was carried out with the involvement of the community at every step of the way, from the design and additional fundraising to the pouring and shaping of the new concrete. At the time of this writing, it is the only skatepark in Nairobi and the capacity is easily exceeded, most afternoons. Skaters come from all over East Africa to skate at this park as it's reportedly the best one in the region. Thanks to all the individual donors and the companies who donated money, resources and time to make this project come to life.
